Asia and Western

Media from the different places can bring the huge difference of how people look at thing, for example men and women. The image of men and women that constructed by the media could create a cultural difference, and shape the people’s view of aesthetic. For example, Asia and Western.
In Asia, media has shaped men differently compare to western, for example in Japan and Korea the men could have a white clean face, acting cute, with different style of color hair or some of them would even wear on make-up. They don’t have to be muscular, tall or any beard to become manly. The girl from Asia would accept that, and think that is cute. In western, men are way differently that shaped by the media. Men would be tall, muscular, short hair, and act manly. On the other hand, women in Asia, media constructed them to be as skinny as possible with decent skin to call beautiful, but in western, the media would consider that a women with good shape of body to call beautiful, some of them are manly or more mature. Compare to the little princess style in Asia, Western has constructed differently and that’s created the cultural difference.

  1. Dear Adrian, The point that you raise here is intriguing. Nevertheless, the image of a slim and tall gentleman is more about the idea of "young beautiful man" in Asian countries, e.g. in Japan. There are still popular images of muscular man. The differences need to be further explored. In your forthcoming ethnographic interview, you can also emphasie the idea that identity is a process, which is more about discursive construction rather than biological given.
