Advertisements
are everywhere in the world. A lot messages are directly delivered to general
public in a day. The most effective delivered message is what the perfect body shape is no matter you are female or male.
The
below advertisement is from Adidas Training which is currently published and is
a perfect example to explain how local media constructed men.
The
advertisement contains 2 parts: image and wording. The image is a muscular HK
star who is doing intensive exercise while the wording is to persuade general
public to achieve what they don’t have. The message is Adidas’ new products can
help and train you to get your perfect body shape.
Where
did the idea of perfect body shape come from? Why is the perfect body shape of men
muscular? I believe those ideas are from Western. Hong Kong’s lifestyle has been influenced by Western culture in these
50 years.
Huge
international brands like to launch their products in Hong Kong. Their perceptions
of perfect body shape are implanted to advertisements in HK.
Left: The advertisement from Calvin Klein in 2014
Right: London Mens Fashion Week SpringSummer 2014 in London
Even in
the movie field, most of main casts of the western movie are muscular.
The stereotype becomes muscular man. The only differ of the local advertisement
and the western one is men in Hong Kong are started to get muscular while the
Western men are muscular. (236 words)

Dear Angel, The writing demonstrates how the image if ideal man is constructed in media. The basics are fine. Proper examples are used. In your forthcoming ethnographic interview, you can integrate the arguments here and make reference to the idea that identity is a process, which is more about discursive construction rather than biological given. Very importantly, try to discuss the influence of similar media messages on the interviewee.
