The demonstration of boys and girls from media
I have listened to a lovely pop song few
years before, wrote and sang by a local singer Lok Yan Ming. The translation of
the song’s Chinese name is ”If I were a boy”(You can enjoy the song here
while reading my blog). The song is briskly and its about a girl imagines how
would she been if she were a boy. I read her imaginations should be the feature
of the boy she likes. For the external factor, she thought that the boy should
like playing basketball and guitar, should be strong, good at sport, etc. The
boy doesn’t need any make-up for hang out and can go back home later and his
family would not reprove him. And for the internal factors, the boy would vindicate
to the girl he loves bravely. Conversely, this is showing that lots of girls in
Hong Kong have a lot of cosmetic and there family would reprove them while they
go back home very late. And girl would not tell the boy she likes him. It is
showing the local girls always have a lot of concern about she have to be
reserved, worrying the boys would thought that they are too wanton. Girls have
to be cultured and polite to people, cannot doing too competent.
There is a similar appearance in Western.
There was a pop song sang by Beyonce also named “If I were a boy”(You can also listen it and read lyrics if you want to). However, this song is not so lovely like the one in Hong Kong. It is
more deep feeling and serious, talking about the girl would try her hard to be a
better man and take very good care to girls if she were a boy. It is because
she have been hearted by her boy before, and she know the feeling while the
girl got heart from the boy she loves. Furthermore, the song have also told
that a boy can dress himself up casually, not like a girl have to make-up and
dress very pretty for giving a good impression to others.
In this situation for the young girl
thought about how a boy has to be, there are no cultural differences in the
local images and the Western ones. They are both thought that the boy has behaved
stronger and active to take care of the girl. Lastly, actually there are many
demonstrations about men and women form media talking about different features
to the one we have research for. Maybe we will find some differences in the
local images and the Western ones next time in another feature.
Dear Check Wah, Nice. The writing demonstrates your understanding of how gender is culturally constructed. In your forthcoming ethnographic interview, you can integrate the arguments here and make reference to the idea that identity is a process, which is more about discursive construction rather than biological given .
