Who built the ideal image?

The concept of ideal man and women can be found in many local media outlet, for example, magazines and newspaper, where advertisements are flooding nowadays. Most of those advertisements are body fitness and beauty companies, which promote their products and services by showing the outstanding body figure and appearance of models or celebrities. This promoting method had constructed the ideal image of man and woman hardly that man have to be muscular and handsome while woman have to be slim and pretty, in order to attract customers to purchase their products and services to achieve the ideal image of man and woman.

These local advertisements have shaped the ideal image of man and woman, telling people that certain type of body figure and appearance are required in order to be a true “man” and “woman”. Throw back to what we discussed in class, nowadays men have a common habit in gym that they would look at the mirror to monitor their muscle’s growth after the weight exercises, this phenomenon has reflected their desire on becoming more and more muscular in order to achieve the ideal image of true “man”, they go to gym for getting more muscular rather than getting more healthier, as well as woman go to gym for getting slimmer. This is the consequence of what local media have constructed the image of man and woman.

  1. Dear Ka Tsun, Nice. The writing demonstrates your understanding of how gender is culturally constructed. In your forthcoming ethnographic interview, you can integrate the arguments here and make reference to the idea that identity is a process, which is more about discursive construction rather than biological given .
