Being Deceived

Illusion is one of the essential effects that most of the media producers want to create, adding meanings or appearance that’s more than the reality, no matter what kind of media and whenever something is being presented through a mediated platform. It is a common sense that people always want or willing to show the good and  beautiful side, as well as media producers, they would to show their production in a better and beautiful way. However, this action would produce an illusion that things’ bad and ugly side being covered and disappeared on mediated platforms, especially visible platforms like images and videos.

Mediated image is detached from the external world to a large extend that people are always being deceived by illusion created by mediation of real objects. This can be explained by Marshall McLuhan’s “Medium is the message”, as the understanding of a message would be affected or determined by the medium that delivered the message, depending on the definition of the medium itself. Once get mediated, the external reality will be more or less get affected, in a result that mediated image is detached from the external world. For example, advertising images always enhancing products’ good and beautiful side even exaggerating, creating illusion to deceive audience to trust the advertisement. However these mediated images are always not reflecting the reality, in other words they are detached from the external world. (233 words)

  1. Dear Ka-tsun, When you refer to "medium is the message," you would need to point out how this can be demonstrated by your McDonald's case. Here, advertising as a specific form of media can be mentioned. Now there is a disconnection here though the discussion of power of image is covered.
