Mobile technologies blur the boundary of private and public space

Do mobile technologies blur the boundary of private and public space? To me, yes, to the large extend mobile technologies blur the boundary of private and public space. Nowadays, mobile phone has many functions such as listen to music, watch movies and access to Facebook and Instagram. However, all of these functions and technologies might blur the boundary of private and public space.

Using “$500港女 as the example, it is about a girl who posted a status on her Facebook that to decline people who would attend their wedding to give only $500 red packet money. She posted that if people who would just give $500 red packet money, she would suggest them not to participate in their wedding. This post had been posted on her own Facebook page. Her own Facebook is her private space. She would only like to share with her friends, cognates and someone who would go to their wedding.

However, Facebook has a share function and mobile phone has screen capture function. Everyone can share others’ posts or capture the post and then send to the other. Therefore, the post would be spread far and wide. The post became popular and easy to find out and many people know the case. Gradually, it led to a hassle in the public. Some people even uncovered her such as her working place, family and Weibo. Originally, she only wanted to share the post in the private space. However, because of the technologies it appeared in the public space. Therefore, mobile technologies blur the boundary of private and public space. (265 words)

  1. Dear Uni, the sharing is in line with what we discussed in class. As we are now moving towards the middle of the term, you can start doing something more analytical in future. You can discuss social impact and significance of the changes in mediascape in forthcoming writing. Taking this writing as example, what would be the social impact of the blurring of boundaries between private and public space?
