The mobile technologies are affecting the Presentation of Self

Mobile technologies are becoming part of our life. The function of this device is not only contact others now. People can do lots of things by this device. Especially people like to present themselves by the mobile applications. Today I want to focus on how people use the mobile technologies to present themselves.

People will upload some photo or video on these mobile applications platform like Instagram and 17 to share their lives to others. According to The Presentation of Self in Everyday Life, every people have the private space and public space. Private space is the thing that is the informal self. And the public space is the formal self or formal activities.

But the mobile technologies are blurring the boundary of Private and Public space. For example, people use 17 to broadcast their lives to others. The most serious things are some of them will broadcast they are having bath, or sexual activities to others. That mean they are presenting their informal selves to the public space. And it is the example of mobile technologies are burring the boundary of private space and public space.

I think it will cause negative effect to people’s everyday life. It will cause the Internet crime like cyber bulling. For example, some people upload some picture about him or her. But we don’t know what will other do against this picture. Here is an example of a Chinese mainlander upload a selfie and then download by others. And people share this photo and start cyber bully to this man. So I think blurring of the boundary will arouse people do more this kind of Internet crime. So it is not good for people everyday’s life.

  1. Dear Billy, The discussion is fine here. You may want to make it clearer when you say technology blurs the boundary of private space and public space. Your definition and examples are more about how the personal/private sphere are now exposed to the public for srutinisation. So presentation of self is alright here but the application of 'blurring of boundaries' needs to be fine tuned.
