Mobile technology allows people to bring
private activities into public space. When people sit on the train and text
with their friends, does it count as private activity, thus a private space?
That depends on how we define public space
and private space. According to Wikipedia, a public space is a social space
that is generally open and accessible to people such as road, public square,
parks and beaches while private space is the region surrounding a person which
they regard as psychologically theirs. I believe everyone got their own definition
as the boundary of public space and private space becomes blurry. People listen
to music in train with their earphones, back to 50 years, people would listen
music indoor instead. People talk their personal lives or feeling in train with
their mobile phone nowadays
while people can only communicate face to face back. In
any way, mobile technology brings the public space personalized.
This technology makes people’s lives
better. No matter it is a public space or private space, you can use the mobile
technology to do whatever you need or want. Employers are easier to make
contact with clients or boss; people can enjoy their moments during long trip
of travelling. This is more convenient than the generation without mobile
technology. (213 words)
Student Name: Chan Nga Yin, Angel
Dear Angel, the discussion on the social change brought about by technology is nice. The blurring of boundaries is addressed with good theoretical perspective. The example about employees' life is a bit off the track as it is more about surveillance rather than the mixing of boundaries though. Nice work!
