The Mobile Technologies blurred the boundary of private and public space

The mobile technologies development were rapid progress. People are addicted with it. Now a days, mobile technologies no longer use for contact somebody, it use for receiving information anytime and anywhere. So that created a blur area between private and public space. That’s mean people can do the personal thing when they are in public area. For example, in AUG 18 this year, somebody saw a children were watching pornographic film in MTR. The point is everyone knows that you should stay at home to do your own personal thing, such as watching porn film.

Let’s have another example on daily life, like Skype. Skype is a free IP and video call application. Before smart phone comes out, people can do the video call at home and do whatever they want to do, like say something romantic or kiss each other via the camera. But after the smart phone show up, and people know that they can use Skype on smart phone. So they just do the same thing at public area and don’t care about they were standing at a public area.

According the Thorstein’s theory, technology drives the development of its social structure and cultural values. That’s mean the technology created convenient way to people which means they can do anything on anytime in any place. So technology stared to blur the boundary of private and public space, because it give people a very convenient way to do their personal thing. Once people do their privacy in a public space, others will followed. That will change the social structure between privacy and public.

I think that’s terrible because when they did something private in a public area, what will the other thinking of them. They may thought that man/woman is crazy and they will started to criticize him/her. Or maybe one day, those people will not be able to separate the private place or the public area. They just do whatever they wanted to do in public space. Like talk to somebody in naked at MTR station.

  1. Dear Patrick, the discussion properly addresses what we discussed in class. I am not too sure why you said that it is terrible experience when you do something private in a public place. Could you explain a bit more? But I am glad that you can try to state the social significance and impact brought about by technology.
