'Hi, can i have your Facebook?'

Social media, is a kind of platform that people can use to  communicate with their friends, family and organization. Social media user usually share their status, post with their companies, the behaviour of using social networking sites are more common in daily life.

Living in the 21 century, social media is more likely to be apart in our daily life. The social networking sites such as Facebook, Instagram, it have more than 1 billion active user use their service to communicate. This is the trend of the social structure and the build of the technological determinism.

In my personal experience, I seldom use these kind of social media, although social media is a very good platform to get close with each other. People post their daily life on their ‘wall’ and share the feelings . There is no doubt that let your friends know more about yourself, but it related to our personal privacy. In Facebook or other social networking site, personal privacy is high concerned. People can find someone who do not know in real life and added he/ she as friend. They can read your profile through the site, it is danger that expose the personal information to someone you do not know well. They can collect the information that you provided in your profile and committed with crimes. This is a serious problem that we can not neglected.

Although social media is a sterling platform to help people understand each other better, there still have problems besides privacy problem that may affect the efficiency of getting know each other. Erving Goffman argues that people have their ‘front’ space and ‘back’ space while communicating with people. According to the theory by Goffman, ‘front’ space is the ‘public’ side or the roles taking of the people. Some of the social media user want to perform their ‘best’ side to show to people, on the other hand, ‘back’ side is the informal side of self the deep in side the person. In the virtual world, it was difficult to divide which was the front space and back space of self. If most of the social media user use their ‘front’ space to communicate with others, it would no help to understand each other.

  1. Dear Tsz Ching, the writing provides a nice discussion of the issue. Goffman's idea is referenced at the end. What the writing lacks is the illustration of personal experience. One may find the mentioning of personal experience but it could be further explained instead of generalising your personal experience to collective experience so quickly. In your forthcoming portfolio assignment, try to make reference to the relevant theoretical terms and concepts more exlicitly. This could help provide the reader with specific theoretical perspective in examining a topic.
