“Medium
is the message” I
must say, before I read this, I never think about there are some messages
inside the medium. Somehow I think medium is also representing of technology.
Many years ago, people who
would like to communicate with others, they had to talk with each other by face
to face. Then one day, people invented writing and using paper or something which
can be noted down. This is one of the solution to solve the communication problem.
They invented a new medium, paper and pen, which is mean people no longer to
talk with other by face to face, they can write a letter or book to communicate
with others. The most important thing is people can choose to use which way to
communicate with others, face to face or just note down. So the message of writing
down something is people have the other choice to communicate.
In fact, I respectfully agree with
McLuhan. For me, medium is talking about something new, something technological
or some creative product. There are only one identical reason, to make people
have a better life. For example, computer.
I' m not talking about a desktop,
notebook or even a super computer which is analysis the data of weather. I was
talking about the whole computer technology. According to McLuhan theory, he
said “the
effects of technology do not occur at the level of opinion or concepts, but
alter sense ratios or patterns of perception steadily and without any
resistance.” I
think that’s
mean technology can change human life and become better.
Before the first computer comes
out, people were using a piece of paper to note down something. But after the
first computer showed up, people can use computer to do many thing, data input,
writing a document or even talk with their friends online. In the future, this
technology can develop to which level? No one’s know. But somehow the computer technology created some messages to people, to make human life comfortably, to do the environmental protection and to create a
whole new world with digital technology.

Dear Patrick, the discussion regarding pen and paper is fine. Your view towards the invention of computer is also well received. The last paragraph is very general when the impact of computer is discussed. Try to be more concise by stating how comfortable life is brought by computer, or how messages can now be conveyed and stored in computer and how this has shaped our life. For example, does it mean that we emphasise more on effectiveness due to the emergence of computer?
