Medium will eventually influence our society?

According to McLuhan, content of any medium is always another medium and each medium carries a message. The message can be irrelevant to the content of medium. The powerful message from different medium can change and shape human thinking and action. The message affects receivers without any resistance. Also, McLuhan explains that receivers tend to focus on the obvious content and ignore the subtle one.

I agree with that "Medium is the message". It is because when we get the message through hot media and cold media, we largely miss some subtle contents and medium may not show a whole incident to their audience, so every medium sends the message to receiver, it will make the audience generate different feeling or attitude, and it will eventually influence our society.

Let's take umbrella revolution as an example, there were lots of negative covering about police, such
as, hitting the demonstrators, passers and reporters, throwing tear gas, even some unrelated news, like some police officers are addicted to gambling. The media seems collecting all the negative news about police and releasing to the general public at once. This will let the audience antipathy Hong Kong police. If the receivers read the information rationally and carefully, they may find out the message of the media is to make general public disgusted with policemen. Medium can be viewed as a way of brain washing the general public. Therefore, the receivers should have logical mind to analyse the meaning behind each news.

  1. Dear Ada, your discussion of umbrella movement is precise. Representation will result in different perceptions of the incident. Nevertheless, the relationship with hot and cool media is not very well established. In fact, you may need to explain more clearly about the differences between the two media in the second paragraph.
